PROTECTION EXERCISES
I. Call Off
The trainer will position a suspect behind a position of
cover. The handler will drive up to predetermined
position and park. The dog will be loose inside the
vehicle with a window down.
The handler will exit the vehicle and begin walking away
from the vehicle. When the handler is approximately 30 yards away from
the vehicle, the suspect will charge at the handler. At this time, the
dog should leave the vehicle and come to the handler's aid. When the dog
is approximately 1-5 yards away from the handler, the suspect will stop
the attack. The suspect will then flee in the opposite direction. The
handler will then call of the dog and immediately get the dog back under
physical control.

II. Attack at Car
The handler will drive up to a predetermined position
with the dog loose inside the vehicle. After the handler
has parked and as the handler is exiting from the
vehicle, a hidden suspect will advance threateningly
toward the vehicle. The dog should be aggressively alert
at the suspect. Once the dog begins barking and showing
aggression towards the suspect, the suspect will turn
and flee.

III. Surprise Attack
The suspect will be hidden in a place out of view of the
advancing dog team. The dog team w ill begin casually
walking down a predetermined course. During this walk,
the team w ill pass the area where the suspect is
hidden. The suspect will jump out of his hiding place
and attempt to assault the handler. The dog should
immediately come to the handler defense by biting the
suspect and ocntinue biting until called off by the
handler. The dog should then cease and return to the
handler.

IV. Assault by Two Suspects
The trainer will hide two suspects in an area not
visible to t he Dog Team. the team will walk to a
predetermined location. At this location, one of the
suspects will approach the handler and ask to talk with
him/her. The handler will leave the dog on a down and
walk to the suspect approximately 7 yards away. During
their conversation, the suspect will attach the handler.
The dog should immediately come to the handler's aid and
bite the suspect. As Suspect 1 is fighting with the dog,
Suspect 2 will then leave his hiding place and will
attack the handler. The handler will then call the dog
off Suspect 1 and redirect the dog to Suspect 2. After a
short fight with Suspect 2, the handler will call the
dog off and regain control of the dog.

V. Residence Protection
This is a two part exercise:
In Part 1, the dog
will be running free in the yard of his residence. A suspect will
attempt to enter the property. The dog must repel the suspect by barking
or physical force if necessary. the handler who has been out of view
inside the residence will exit the residence and regain control of the
dog.
In Part 2, the dog
will be free within his residence. The handler will also be in the
residence, but not in the room where the suspect will attempt to make
entry. The suspect will attempt to make entry into the residence without
permission. The dog should approach the suspect and begin to bark. The
suspect will then challenge the dog, at which time the dog should bite
the suspect. The handler will then enter the room and call of the dog,
and regain control.
